Lipoedema (also spelled lipodema) is a chronic, painful fat distribution disorder that primarily affects women. Yet, there's still a lot of confusion about this condition. In this blog post, we'll summarize the most common misconceptions about Lipoedema and demystify what's fact and what's pure myth. Because only with the right knowledge can you make the right choices!

Lipodema is caused by eating too much or exercising too little
MYTH – Lipodema treatment begins with understanding that this condition is not a result of an unhealthy lifestyle. It's a chronic condition that often develops during puberty, pregnancy, or hormonal fluctuations. Losing weight with Lipodema is difficult because fat cannot be burned. However, a healthy diet plays an important and supportive role in reducing inflammation and fluid retention.

Lipodema occurs almost exclusively in women
FACT – Lipoedema affects women in 99% of cases. The condition has a strong hormonal component and often develops during periods of hormonal change, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
Lipodema is 'just' being overweight
MYTH – Although Lipoedema and obesity can occur simultaneously; they are two completely different things. Lipoedma symptoms are characterized by symmetrical fat deposits on the buttocks, hips, legs, knees, and sometimes arms. The waist often remains slim, resulting in an unbalanced figure. A key difference: Lipoedema is painful. Think of tenderness, bruising, subcutaneous inflammation, and tired legs.
Lipoedema is hereditary
FACT – Research shows that Lipoedema has a genetic component. In many families, the condition affects multiple women. Yet, it often goes unrecognized, meaning the link is sometimes made very late.
There is nothing that can be done about it
MYTH – Fortunately, Lipodema treatment options are becoming increasingly available. Consider wearing compression garments for Lipoedema, lymphatic drainage, exercise, or liposuction for Lipodema treatment. Adjusting your diet (for example, an anti-inflammatory diet) can also make a significant difference in the number of symptoms you experience and how you feel.

Compression garments help with Lipoedema
FACT – Wearing compression garments, such as Lipoelastic ACTIVE leggings or TBfLg leggings , helps support the lymphatic system, reduces pain, and promotes fluid drainage. Many women experience a noticeable difference with consistent use.

Lipoedema only affects one body type
MYTH – Even slim women can have Lipoedema.
Lipoedema isn't about weight, but about how fat accumulates in certain parts of the body. So don't be dismissed with "you just need to lose some weight" - this is common, but incorrect, advice for Lipoedema.
Lipoedema causes painful legs and easy bruising
FACT – One of the main Lipodema symptoms is pain to the touch, often combined with a heavy or tired feeling in the legs. Bruising occurs easily, even with minor bumps, because the connective tissue and blood vessels are more fragile.
Lipoedema is all in your head
MYTH – Lipoedema is not a psychological condition. It's a recognized medical condition with clear symptoms. Yet, many women experience years of misunderstanding, even from the medical community. A correct diagnosis is therefore essential. Seek out a specialist with knowledge of Lipoedema if you think you (or someone you know) may be experiencing it.
Your diet can influence your symptoms
FACT – While dieting can't cure Lipoedema, it does play a significant role in how you feel. An anti-inflammatory diet low in added sugars and processed foods helps reduce swelling and pain.
